Has Computational Linguistics Become More Applied?

چکیده
Where the field has been and where it is going? It is relatively easy to know where we have been, but harder (and more valuable) to know where we are going. The title of this paper, borrowed from Hull, Jurafsky and Martin (2008), suggests that applications have become more important, and that industrial laboratories will become increasingly prestigious. 1 Rise of Statistical Methods Some trends are pretty well established. The Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) is clearly accepting more statistical papers than it used to. Both Bob Moore (personal communication) and Fred Jelinek (personal communication) performed independent surveys and found a dramatic increase in statistical papers over the last couple decades [7]. 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% 1985 199

Investigation Into Researcher Identity in Qualitative Research Articles in Applied Linguistics Journals Through Lens of CDA
Recently, constructing professional identity has received an increasing attention. By adopting and adapting analytical tools of critical discourse analysis (CDA), this study explored the ways through which identities of the qualitative researchers had been projected in 4 applied linguistics articles. This study intended to find out whether the authors of qualitative research articles in applied...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Yarowsky Algorithm
Bootstrapping, or semi-supervised learning, has become an important topic in computational linguistics. For many language-processing tasks, there is an abundance of unlabeled data, but labeled data is lacking and too expensive to create in large quantities, making bootstrapping techniques desirable. The Yarowsky algorithm [5] was one of the first bootstrapping algorithms to become widely known ...

متن کاملHedging as an Index of Gender Realization in Research Articles in Applied Linguistics
Despite the importance of hedging in academic productions, its use in different disciplines and genres has been given little attention (Hyland, 1998; Crystal, 1995). More precisely, the role of different genders as contributors to this social phenomenon (i.e., research articles) has been taken as neutral, as if gender is inconsequential in identity construction. The studies done in English sugg...
متن کاملA Genre Analysis of the Introduction Section of Applied Linguistics and Chemistry Research Articles
This study investigated the cross-disciplinary variations in the generic structure of Introduction sections of 52 Applied Linguistics and 52 Chemistry research articles drawing upon Swales’ (2004) framework, taking into account the new insights proposed by Bhatia (2004), Shehzad (2008), and Lim (2012, 2014). To this end, in addition to collecting quantitative data and conducting frequency and C...
